How do I translate my giveaway into other languages?

Quick answer

Edit your giveaway, open the TRANSLATIONS tab and add a language. Translate the widget labels and each entry action's text by hand, or click AI Translate to fill them in automatically, then save. On Shopify, the widget shows the translation that matches your store's current language. On other sites, it follows the visitor's browser language.

One giveaway can speak every language your store sells in. You add a translation per language, and each visitor automatically sees the giveaway in the language they're browsing your store in.

How does the widget choose the language?

  • On Shopify: the widget reads the language your storefront is currently showing (Shopify.locale), the one you set up with Shopify's languages and markets. A shopper browsing your French store sees your French translation.
  • On other sites: the widget follows the visitor's browser language.
  • Matching: the exact code wins first, such as pt-BR. If there's no exact match, the base language is used, so a fr-CA visitor sees your fr translation.
  • Fallback: any field you leave blank, and any language you haven't added, shows your original text.

How do I add a translation?

  1. Edit your giveaway and open the TRANSLATIONS tab.
  2. Pick a language from the list (more than 40, from Arabic to Vietnamese) and click Add Language.
  3. Fill in the Widget Labels tab: the launch button, description, form placeholders, buttons, countdown, terms, messages, leaderboard and gallery labels. Each field shows your original text under it as the default.
  4. Open the Entry Action Labels tab and translate each action's title, description, buttons and poll options.
  5. Or click AI Translate and choose Translate All (overwrites what's there) or Add Missing (keeps your translations and fills the gaps). Review the result, especially product names and wordplay.
  6. Click Done, then save the giveaway.

While you edit a language, the preview shows the giveaway in it, and the tab shows the language code. Switching to the ENTRY ACTIONS tab returns the preview to your original text. You can edit or remove a language from the list at any time.

What stays in the original language?

  • The giveaway title. It isn't on the list, so it shows the same in every language. Pick a title that works everywhere, such as your brand name and the prize, and put language-specific wording in the description, which you can translate.
  • Answer a Question. You can translate the question, but replies are always checked against the Answer field you set. Use an answer that works in every language, such as a code or a number.
  • Emails. Confirmation and reminder emails use the text you set in the giveaway.

Poll results stay together: votes are saved under your original option names, so answers from every language add up in the same chart.

How can translations help my brand?

  • One giveaway for every market. Instead of cloning a giveaway per language, run one: shared totals, one leaderboard, one draw.
  • More sign-ups abroad. Shoppers join a giveaway they can read. A translated form, buttons and terms remove a common reason international visitors leave without entering.
  • The local word for "giveaway". On the launch button, AI Translate uses the word locals use for a giveaway, such as Gewinnspiel in German, Sorteo in Spanish and Concours in French.
  • Local prizes when you need them. For a prize that only ships to one country, run a separate giveaway with the COUNTRY filter in the ADVANCED tab, translated for that market.
  • Rules people understand. Translate the terms too, so entrants in every market can read what they agree to.

People also ask

Which language does the widget show?

On Shopify, the language your storefront is showing (Shopify.locale). Elsewhere, the visitor's browser language. If you haven't added that language, the widget shows your original text. See how to install Giveaway Ninja on Shopify.

What happens to fields I leave blank?

They show your original text, so you can translate the most visible labels first and fill in the rest later. See how to set up a giveaway on Shopify.

Do translated polls split the results by language?

No. Votes are saved under your original option names, so every language adds up in the same results. See how to run a poll or survey inside your giveaway.

Are the giveaway emails translated too?

No. Translations cover the widget and its entry actions. Emails such as the confirmation email use the text you set in the giveaway. Connected email tools send in whatever language you write there, as in Klaviyo.
