How do I add a quiz question or secret code to my giveaway?

Quick answer

Add the Answer a Question entry action and type your question. Leave the answer empty to accept any reply, or enter the correct answer to turn it into a quiz or a secret code check: entrants who type anything else see your wrong-answer message and earn nothing until they get it right. Every accepted answer is saved in your dashboard.

Answer a Question adds a question to your giveaway. Leave the answer open to collect opinions, or set a correct answer to run a quiz or ask for a secret code that only the right people know.

How does Answer a Question work?

The entrant reads your question, types a reply and clicks the button, "✔ Send Answer" by default. What happens next depends on the Answer field:

Answer fieldWhat entrants can sendUse it for
EmptyAny replyOpen questions, feedback, ideas
Filled inOnly the correct answerQuizzes, trivia and secret codes

When you set an answer, the check ignores letter case and spaces at the start or end, but the rest must match exactly. A wrong reply shows your Wrong Answer Message and earns nothing, and the entrant can try again.

Accepted answers appear on your giveaway's Entries page in the Content / Validation column, saved in lowercase. The POLLS & QUESTIONS CSV export puts them in a column per question, next to each entrant's email.

How do I set up Answer a Question?

  1. Edit your giveaway, open the ENTRY ACTIONS tab and click Answer a Question in the Boost On-site Engagement group.
  2. Write the Title and the Question. The question editor supports formatting and links.
  3. Enter the Answer if there's a right one, and the Wrong Answer Message entrants see when they miss.
  4. Set the Value, and switch on Mandatory or Allow Daily if you need them.
  5. Click the small SAVE button, then save the giveaway.

How can I use a secret code to reward the right people?

Set the Answer to a code, then share the code only where the people you want to reward will see it. Only they can unlock the bonus entries:

  • On the packaging. Print the code on an insert card or the receipt, so customers who bought, online or offline, earn extra entries.
  • In your store or at an event. Put the code on a poster at a pop-up, a market stall or your checkout counter, and see how many visitors joined.
  • In your newsletter. Reward subscribers who actually open your emails, and see who reads them.
  • In a livestream or video. Say the code halfway through, so only people who watched earn the entries.
  • A code of the day. Switch on Allow Daily and change the answer every morning. Post the new code in your stories and entrants come back daily to find it.

Keep codes for bonus entries. The code is checked by the giveaway widget, so treat it as a fun gate for extra entries, not as protection for a high-value prize or as proof of purchase. To reward orders, use purchase-based entries, which Giveaway Ninja matches to real Shopify orders.

What else can I use a question for?

  • Product knowledge quiz. "Which of our roasts is the darkest?" Pair it with Visit a Page pointing at the collection, so entrants browse your products to find the answer.
  • Feedback in their own words. Leave the answer empty and ask "What should we launch next?" or "What almost stopped you from buying?"
  • Brand story. Ask something your About page answers, and more people learn why you started.
  • Multiple choice instead? For answers you want to count and chart, use Polls & Surveys.

People also ask

Is the answer case-sensitive?

No. "Blue", "BLUE" and " blue " all match an answer of "blue", but "light blue" doesn't: apart from letter case and spaces at the ends, the whole answer must match. See how to set up a giveaway on Shopify.

Where do I see what entrants answered?

On the giveaway's Entries page: filter by Answer a Question, or download the POLLS & QUESTIONS CSV for one row per entrant. For multiple-choice questions, use Polls & Surveys.

Can entrants try again after a wrong answer?

Yes. A wrong answer earns nothing and isn't saved, so they can keep trying until they get it right. To stop guessing, hide the answer somewhere worth visiting, as in Visit a Page.

Does the answer work when the widget is translated?

The question can be translated, but replies are always checked against the Answer field you set. Use an answer that works in every language, such as a code or a number. See how to translate your giveaway.
